I Support Learning Partners with Guidance Academy of Pre-Engineering and Technology for Community Outreach Program

Focused on helping at-risk students find success in learning, ISL and Guidance Academy to offer summer course teaching video game development. ISL has committed professional development, mentoring, and a variety of career simulations to help GASTEM reach out to these bright young minds. The Support Learning Foundation has committed resources to help sustain GASTEM. GASTEM is a collaborative effort with the learner at the center.

OLATHE, KS, 1 May 2006 – I Support Learning, Inc. and Guidance Academy are working together to provide three summer courses teaching Video Game Development to inner-city students looking for pathways into science and engineering.

As an introduction to the Kansas City community, the Guidance Academy will be hosting three sessions targeted toward at-risk students. The sessions are designed around an exciting topic like video games as a way to reach kids during the summer. Furthermore, the goal is to show these students the value of school and how their learning is tied directly to career paths.

The curriculum will show them what their futures hold for them by teaching more than just programming; the students will be learning important job and life skills. The “virtual internships” created by the curriculum are an ideal way to authentically reach out to the students and give them the chance to taste the excitement of video game development and working in the real world.

In a time where the statistics are frightening about literacy and drop-out rates, these summer classes are geared to bring an understanding of how science, technology, language, math and art all come together in the real world.
